Do Natural Pest Controls Actually Work?

Some natural pest controls work when they are matched to the correct pest, life stage, plant and timing. Others have little reliable evidence or create new risks.

“Natural” does not mean harmless, chemical-free or automatically effective. Natural substances can burn plants, poison animals and kill beneficial insects.

Define the control method

Natural pest control may refer to:

  • Predators and parasitoids

  • Microbial or biological products

  • Physical barriers

  • Hand removal

  • Traps

  • Crop rotation

  • Habitat management

  • Plant-derived pesticides

  • Oils or soaps

  • Homemade mixtures

These methods do not have the same evidence, risks or legal status.


Identification comes first

Before selecting a control:

  1. Identify the plant.

  2. Identify the pest.

  3. Confirm that it is causing the damage.

  4. Determine its life stage.

  5. Check whether beneficial organisms are present.

  6. Decide whether damage justifies action.

A product effective against exposed young insects may do little against eggs, protected scale insects or larvae inside a stem.


Physical controls

Physical methods can be highly effective in small gardens.

Examples include:

  • Hand removal

  • Pruning a limited infestation

  • A firm water spray for some soft-bodied insects

  • Wildlife-safe exclusion mesh

  • Fruit bags

  • Collars or barriers

  • Removal of infested fallen fruit

  • Pest-specific traps

Success depends on timing and maintenance. A barrier installed after pests are inside may protect the pest rather than the crop.

Loose or poorly installed netting can entangle wildlife.


Cultural controls

Cultural controls change the conditions that allow a problem to develop.

They include:

  • Growing plants in suitable conditions

  • Using resistant cultivars

  • Rotating annual crops

  • Removing known pest reservoirs

  • Cleaning tools

  • Managing fallen fruit

  • Improving airflow

  • Avoiding excessive nitrogen

  • Quarantining new plants

  • Planting at a suitable time

These methods usually reduce risk rather than eliminating every pest.


Biological control

Predators, parasitoids and pathogens can suppress pests.


Helpful organisms may include:

  • Ladybirds

  • Lacewings

  • Hoverfly larvae

  • Predatory mites

  • Spiders

  • Parasitic wasps

  • Pest-specific microbial controls


Biological control works best when:

  • The correct beneficial organism is present.

  • The target pest is at a vulnerable stage.

  • Broad-spectrum pesticides are avoided.

  • Suitable food and shelter remain available.

  • Conditions support the beneficial organism.

  • Pest numbers are not already overwhelming.

A predator needs some prey. A garden with absolutely no insects cannot sustain a resident predator population.


Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils

Registered insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils can control some exposed soft-bodied pests, including certain aphids, mites, whiteflies and young scale insects.


They often require:

  • Direct contact with the pest

  • Thorough coverage

  • Correct timing

  • Repeat applications

  • Suitable temperature and weather

  • Label compliance


They have little or no useful residual effect against pests that arrive later.

Do not replace a registered insecticidal soap with household detergent. Homemade soap mixtures can damage leaf waxes and burn plants.


Neem and other plant-derived products

Plant-derived products contain active chemicals. Their effects vary according to formulation, concentration, pest and application.

Neem products may reduce feeding or disrupt development in some insects, but they are not instant universal killers. Coverage and repeat timing may matter.

Pyrethrins originate from plants but can affect a broad range of insects, including beneficial species. Derris and other historically promoted “natural” materials should not be assumed safe or currently approved.

Use only a product registered or otherwise lawfully authorised for the intended home-garden use.


Do companion plants repel pests?

Mixed planting can provide flowers, shelter and alternative resources for beneficial organisms. It may also make some crops less apparent to pests or improve use of space.

However, claims that one plant reliably protects every nearby crop are often overstated. Marigolds, garlic or aromatic herbs do not create a general pest-proof zone.

Use companion planting as one part of garden design, not as a replacement for identification and monitoring.


What about homemade sprays?

Online recipes may contain:

  • Detergent

  • Chilli

  • Garlic

  • Vinegar

  • Essential oils

  • Alcohol

  • Salt

  • Bicarbonate

  • Plant extracts


Possible risks include:

  • Leaf burn

  • Eye or skin injury

  • Harm to beneficial insects

  • Pet exposure

  • Unknown residues on food

  • Contaminated runoff

  • Unapproved pesticide use

  • No reliable dose or withholding period

Do not assume a kitchen ingredient is safe when concentrated and sprayed onto a plant.


Registered products still require care

The APVMA assesses agricultural chemical products and their approved labels. If a use is not on the label, the APVMA has not approved that use for that product.


Before using any pest-control product:

  • Confirm the plant and pest are covered.

  • Read the full label.

  • Follow the rate.

  • Use required protective equipment.

  • Observe withholding periods.

  • Protect pollinators and waterways.

  • Store and dispose of the product correctly.

“Organic”, “natural” or “low-risk” wording does not replace these directions.


Why natural control sometimes appears to fail

Possible reasons include:

  • Wrong pest identification

  • Treatment at the wrong life stage

  • Poor coverage

  • Pest protected inside tissue

  • Rain soon after application

  • Heat-related plant injury

  • Population too large for the method

  • New pests continually arriving

  • Beneficial organisms killed by another product

  • The damage was not caused by a pest

Record what happens instead of applying several remedies at once.


A lower-risk decision sequence

  1. Identify the pest and damage.

  2. Monitor whether numbers are increasing.

  3. Decide how much damage is acceptable.

  4. Correct plant-health and hygiene problems.

  5. Use physical controls.

  6. Protect beneficial organisms.

  7. Select a registered lower-risk product if needed.

  8. Follow the label.

  9. Recheck pest and beneficial numbers.

  10. Change the plan if evidence shows it is not working.


Evidence and limitations

Natural controls can reduce pest numbers, but no method guarantees complete control. Their performance is pest-specific and condition-specific.
