Animal & Plant Partnerships

Plants and animals affect one another through pollination, seed dispersal, feeding, shelter, defence and habitat creation. A relationship may benefit both partners, benefit one without a clear effect on the other, or change with season and conditions.

What This Index Covers

This index covers pollinators, seed and fruit dispersers, herbivores, shelter and nesting plants, ant-plant relationships, protective animals, food webs and habitat design. It avoids assuming that a flower shape proves one pollinator or that feeding wildlife is the same as restoring a natural partnership.

Coverage and Evidence

Observation of an animal on a plant does not prove pollination, seed dispersal or mutual benefit. Relationships can be specialised, seasonal and disrupted by introduced species. Supplementary feeding can spread disease, alter behaviour or favour common species. Do not handle wildlife, nests or protected plants without authority. Use local records and habitat needs rather than broad claims about “wildlife-friendly” plants.
