Why Are My Leaves Turning Yellow?

Yellowing is called chlorosis. It occurs when leaves contain less chlorophyll, but it does not identify one specific problem.
Leaves can turn yellow because of normal ageing, unsuitable water, damaged roots, poor light, nutrient imbalance, pests, disease or environmental stress. Diagnose the pattern before adding fertiliser.

Is the yellowing normal?
Older leaves eventually age, yellow and fall. This may be normal when:
Only a small number of old leaves are affected.
New growth is healthy.
The plant is still growing.
There are no lesions, pests or stem symptoms.
The plant is entering a normal seasonal rest period.
Large numbers of yellow leaves, yellow new growth or continuing decline require closer investigation.
Record the pattern
Ask:
Are old or young leaves affected first?
Is the whole leaf yellow?
Are the veins still green?
Are the leaf edges yellow or burnt?
Are there spots, rings or mottling?
Is only one branch affected?
Are several plant species affected?
Did the problem begin after rain, repotting, fertilising or spraying?
Photograph the entire plant and close views of both leaf surfaces. A close-up without the whole plant can hide the pattern needed for diagnosis.
Check soil moisture first
Both dry and waterlogged soil can produce yellowing.
Dry soil
Roots cannot supply enough water, and leaves may wilt, curl, dry or fall.
Waterlogged soil
Water replaces air in soil pores. Roots lose access to oxygen, become damaged and take up water and nutrients poorly.
Check below the surface. If the soil is wet, do not add more water because the leaves are wilting.
Correct blocked drainage, standing water or unsuitable watering before applying fertiliser.
Inspect the roots
For a manageable container plant, slide the root ball out carefully.
Healthy roots vary by species but are generally firm. Warning signs include:
Soft brown or black roots
Sour smell
Sloughing outer tissue
Dense circling roots
Very dry compacted mix
Few living fine roots
Pests in the root zone
Do not repeatedly remove a struggling plant from its pot. Inspect once, act on clear evidence and minimise further root disturbance.
Large trees and valuable plants should be assessed by an appropriately qualified professional.
Check the light
Insufficient light can reduce chlorophyll, producing pale or yellow growth. Other signs may include:
Long weak stems
Wide gaps between leaves
Leaning towards light
Reduced flowering
Loss of older leaves
Move a container plant gradually to a more suitable position. Sudden exposure to strong sun can scorch shade-grown leaves.
For an in-ground plant, determine whether surrounding vegetation or a new structure changed its light conditions.
Consider nutrient availability
Yellow lower leaves can be consistent with nitrogen deficiency, but symptoms alone do not confirm it.
Nutrients may be present but unavailable because of:
Unsuitable pH
Waterlogging
Root disease
Compaction
Cold or damaged roots
Excess salts
Imbalance with another nutrient
Yellow young leaves with greener veins may suggest an immobile nutrient problem such as iron availability, but the plant species, soil pH and root condition must be considered.
Test the soil or growing medium before making substantial corrections. Excess fertiliser can burn roots, increase salt stress and contaminate runoff.
Look for pests
Examine:
Leaf undersides
Growing tips
Stems
Leaf joints
Soil surface
Webbing, scales, eggs, honeydew or droppings
Sap-feeding insects and mites may cause stippling, mottling, distortion or general yellowing.
Do not treat an insect simply because it is present. It may be a predator or harmless visitor.
Look for disease
Possible warning signs include:
Expanding spots
Dark or water-soaked lesions
Stem cankers
Sudden branch dieback
Distorted new growth
Grey or white fungal growth
Rot at the crown
A repeating pattern across nearby plants
Some diseases cannot be diagnosed accurately from leaf colour alone. A plant diagnostic service may require affected leaves, stems, roots and site information.
Separate a suspect indoor plant from healthy plants while investigating.
Review recent changes
Yellowing may follow:
Repotting
Transplanting
Root disturbance
A heatwave
Cold weather
Flooding
Herbicide drift
Excess fertiliser
A pesticide or cleaning spray
Sudden movement indoors or outdoors
Heavy pruning
Write down what changed before applying another treatment.
Do not use fertiliser as a first response
A stressed or root-damaged plant may be unable to use added nutrients. Fertiliser does not repair rotted roots, poor drainage or unsuitable light.
Apply a fertiliser only when:
The plant requires feeding.
Moisture and drainage are suitable.
A deficiency is reasonably supported.
The product suits the plant and growing system.
The label rate can be followed.
Avoid combining several remedies. If the plant improves or declines, you will not know which action caused the result.
A practical diagnostic sequence
Confirm the plant’s identity.
Decide whether normal ageing is possible.
Record which leaves yellowed first.
Check soil moisture and drainage.
Inspect roots if practical.
Check light, heat and recent weather.
Examine for pests and disease.
Review fertiliser and chemical use.
Test the soil where appropriate.
Correct the most likely confirmed cause.
Monitor new growth.
Old yellow leaves may not become green again. Recovery is often shown by healthy new growth.
When replacement may be safer
Remove or professionally assess a plant when:
It has extensive root or stem rot.
A serious contagious disease is confirmed.
It is structurally unsafe.
It is a regulated plant-pest or biosecurity concern.
Continued treatment poses risks to nearby plants.
Its growing conditions cannot be made suitable.
Clean tools and containers before using them around healthy plants.

Yellow leaves are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Several problems may occur at the same time.
