Soil improvement works best when it responds to a measured limitation. Organic matter, mulch, fertilisers, lime, gypsum and other amendments affect different soil processes and are not interchangeable. Plant nutrition also depends on roots, moisture, oxygen, pH, temperature and interactions between nutrients.

It does not prescribe universal amendment rates.

Coverage and Evidence

Visual symptoms can have several causes and should not be used alone to diagnose deficiency. Amendment rates must be based on soil properties, product composition, target plants and local conditions. Excess nutrients can burn plants, unbalance soils and pollute water. Use verified compost or manure sources in food-growing areas and seek advice for contaminated or strongly constrained soils.
