Land repair begins by understanding why soil is bare, compacted, eroding, contaminated or unable to support the intended community. Adding compost or plants without addressing the cause can waste resources or make the problem worse.

It distinguishes garden-scale improvement from contaminated-land work, mine rehabilitation and engineered slope repair that require qualified professionals.

Assess the cause - Record land use, disturbance, slope, water movement, soil condition and remaining vegetation.

Stabilise first - Reduce active erosion, unsafe access and further disturbance before adding materials.

Test where needed - Use appropriate sampling for nutrients, salinity, acidity or suspected contaminants.

Rebuild soil function - Support cover, structure, carbon inputs, roots and soil organisms without over-amending.

Revegetate in stages - Match plants and establishment methods to the reference ecosystem and current constraints.

Monitor recovery - Measure groundcover, erosion, infiltration, plant survival and unwanted change over time.

Coverage and Evidence

Soil rehabilitation is site-specific. A single pH, nutrient result or purchased soil product cannot describe whole-site function. Imported soil, mulch and fill may introduce weeds, pathogens or contamination. Earthworks can redirect water and destabilise slopes. Where contamination, buried waste, acid sulfate soil, severe erosion or structural risk is possible, stop and obtain qualified assessment and required approvals.
