The narrow zone around roots is called the rhizosphere. Roots release compounds and alter water and nutrients there, while bacteria, archaea, fungi and other organisms can affect nutrient cycling, growth, disease and stress responses.

What This Index Covers
This index covers the rhizosphere, root exudates, nitrogen-fixing nodules, nutrient-mobilising organisms, disease-suppressive communities, endophytes, pathogens, soil food webs, research methods and microbial products. It separates general soil biodiversity from evidence for a specific organism, crop or claimed benefit.

Coverage and Evidence
Microbial communities are extremely diverse and can change over short distances and time. Detecting DNA does not prove that an organism is alive, active or causing an observed effect. A benefit found in one host, soil or controlled trial may not transfer to another site. Do not brew or apply unverified microbial products where human, animal or plant pathogens could be introduced. Start with soil protection and measured site needs.
