Water connects slopes, soils, drains, wetlands, streams, floodplains and estuaries. A change in one part of a catchment can move erosion, pollution or flooding somewhere else, so waterway repair must look beyond the visible problem point.

This index covers catchment context, flow paths, infiltration, erosion, streambanks, riparian vegetation, wetlands, water quality, barriers, stormwater, monitoring and approvals. It distinguishes low-risk revegetation from channel works, dams, drainage changes and flood interventions that require qualified design and legal permission.

Read the catchment - Trace where water comes from, where it moves and what lies downstream.

Assess condition - Record flow, erosion, sediment, vegetation, habitat, water quality and infrastructure.

Protect natural processes - Retain floodplain space, riparian cover, woody habitat and suitable wetland function.

Repair causes - Address runoff, access, bare soil, weeds or barriers rather than treating symptoms alone.

Use appropriate works - Match revegetation, stabilisation or engineered measures to scale and risk.

Monitor through time - Check performance during dry periods, ordinary flows and significant rain.

Coverage and Evidence

Waterways are dynamic. Straightening, deepening, armouring, diverting or filling can increase erosion, flood risk or habitat loss elsewhere. Water quality results also vary with timing, flow and sampling method. Do not enter floodwater, unstable banks or contaminated water. Obtain landholder and regulatory approval and qualified hydrological, ecological or engineering advice for higher-risk works.
