Shanti Plants - The Earth Provides

A growing system brings together plants, soil or substrate, water, access, structures, labour and management. The best system is not the most fashionable one; it is the one that fits the site, purpose, available care and needs of the selected plants.

 

What This Index Covers

This index compares in-ground beds, raised beds, containers, wicking systems, protected growing, orchards, agroforestry and food-forest approaches, hydroponic or soilless systems, nursery production and restoration plantings. It focuses on design conditions and trade-offs rather than naming one universal solution.

System performance depends on design, materials and management. Claims about water savings, yield or low maintenance should identify the comparison and conditions. Containers, roofs, balconies, pumps, lights and water storage can introduce structural, electrical and hygiene risks. Check food-contact materials, drainage, overflow and local building or water rules where relevant.
