How Can I Manage Garden Pests and Diseases with Lower-Risk Methods?

“Chemical-free pest control” is not an accurate description. Water, plant oils, soaps and homemade sprays are all made of chemicals, and natural substances can still harm people, plants, pets and wildlife.

A more useful goal is to prevent problems, identify the cause and use the least harmful effective response. This approach is called integrated pest management, or IPM.


Begin with identification

Do not treat a problem until you have investigated its cause.


Leaf spots, yellowing, wilting or poor growth may result from:

  • Insects or mites

  • Fungal, bacterial or viral disease

  • Too much or too little water

  • Heat, cold, wind or sunburn

  • Nutrient imbalance

  • Root damage

  • Herbicide drift

  • Poor drainage

  • Normal ageing

  • Physical injury


Look at the whole plant, including the undersides of leaves, stems, growing tips and surrounding soil.

Record:

  • Which plant is affected

  • Where the damage began

  • Whether it is spreading

  • Recent weather

  • Watering or fertilising changes

  • Insects, webbing, eggs or droppings

  • Whether nearby plants show the same symptoms

Take several clear photographs, including the entire plant and close views of the damage.


Decide whether action is necessary

A healthy garden does not need to be free of insects or damaged leaves.

Ask:

  • Is the plant continuing to grow?

  • Is damage limited to older foliage?

  • Is the pest population increasing?

  • Are beneficial insects present?

  • Is the edible harvest being affected?

  • Could the damage threaten nearby plants?

  • Is the plant important enough to justify treatment?

Home gardens rarely have formal economic thresholds, but the principle remains useful: do not apply a control simply because one insect or blemished leaf is present.


Strengthen plant health

Plants growing in suitable conditions are often better able to tolerate minor damage.

Check:

  • Light

  • Soil drainage

  • Watering depth and frequency

  • Mulch placement

  • Root space

  • Air movement

  • Plant spacing

  • Nutrition

  • Climate suitability

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser. Soft, rapid growth may be more attractive to some sap-feeding pests and can produce weak plants.

Plant health cannot prevent every pest or disease, but correcting a site problem may be more effective than repeatedly treating symptoms.


Use garden hygiene carefully

Helpful hygiene actions include:

  • Remove badly affected plant material.

  • Collect fallen diseased leaves where this is recommended for the disease.

  • Clean soil and plant residue from tools.

  • Disinfect tools when moving between infected and healthy plants.

  • Wash hands after handling diseased material.

  • Use clean propagation material and potting mix.

  • Quarantine new plants long enough to inspect them.

Do not compost diseased material unless the home system can reliably manage that organism. Follow local waste guidance for disposal.

Avoid removing all leaf litter from habitat areas without reason. Hygiene should target a known problem rather than eliminate useful habitat across the garden.


Try physical and mechanical controls

For a small garden, direct controls may be enough.

Options include:

  • Hand removal

  • Pruning a limited infestation

  • A firm stream of water for some soft-bodied insects

  • Barriers or collars

  • Approved insect-exclusion mesh

  • Traps designed for the identified pest

  • Removing heavily infested fruit

  • Protecting young plants during their most vulnerable stage

Choose wildlife-safe netting and keep it tight, supported and checked. Loose netting can trap birds, bats, reptiles and other animals.


Support beneficial species

Predators and parasitoids can suppress some pests. These may include ladybirds, lacewings, hoverfly larvae, spiders, predatory bugs and tiny parasitoid wasps.

Support them by:

  • Growing a range of flowering plants

  • Providing flowers across different seasons

  • Retaining suitable shelter

  • Avoiding unnecessary broad-spectrum insecticides

  • Tolerating a small number of prey insects

  • Reducing night lighting where practical

Do not assume that every insect on a damaged plant caused the damage. It may be feeding on the pest.


Use crop and garden planning

Preventive practices may include:

  • Rotating susceptible annual crops

  • Removing alternate weed hosts where appropriate

  • Choosing resistant cultivars

  • Improving airflow

  • Watering soil rather than repeatedly wetting foliage

  • Planting at a suitable season

  • Avoiding repeated planting of the same family in the same soil

  • Separating new plants from established collections

Crop rotation is less effective against organisms that survive for long periods, travel widely or attack many plant families. It should be one part of a broader plan.


When a product may be justified

A registered home-garden product may be appropriate when:

  • The pest or disease has been identified.

  • Damage is increasing or unacceptable.

  • Lower-risk measures have not provided enough control.

  • The product label covers the plant, pest and intended use.

  • Risks to pollinators, pets, wildlife and waterways can be managed.


Read the entire label before purchase and again before use. Follow the stated rate, protective equipment, application method, withholding period, storage and disposal directions.


If a use is not on the label, the APVMA has not assessed and approved that use for the product. “Natural” or homemade does not mean harmless or legally suitable.


Avoid spraying open flowers or active pollinators unless the approved label specifically permits the use and its risk controls can be followed.


Reassess after treatment

Record:

  • What was used

  • Date and weather

  • Area treated

  • Pest numbers before and after

  • Plant response

  • Effects on beneficial organisms

  • Any unexpected injury

Repeated treatment without improvement suggests that the cause may be wrong, the timing unsuitable or the plant poorly matched to the site.


A practical IPM sequence

  1. Observe the symptoms.

  2. Identify the plant and likely cause.

  3. Check whether the damage is increasing.

  4. Correct water, soil, light or plant-health problems.

  5. Use hygiene and physical controls.

  6. Protect beneficial organisms.

  7. Use a registered product only when justified.

  8. Follow the label.

  9. Monitor the result and adjust the plan.


Evidence and limitations

IPM does not promise complete control or a garden without damage. Its aim is to combine informed actions and reduce unnecessary reliance on pesticides.
